A lead anchor is a soft-metal expansion anchor used in:
Concrete
Brick
Block
Stone
When a screw is driven in, the lead body expands outward, gripping the hole tightly.
These anchors are chosen for jobs where vibration, cracking, or irregular masonry are concerns.
Lead anchors work well in:
Old brick
Soft block
Crumbly mortar
Low‑strength concrete
Because lead is soft, it expands gently and doesn’t crack the material.
Common applications include:
Electrical boxes and conduit straps
Pipe clamps and brackets
Shelving supports
Light fixtures
Sign brackets
Handrail brackets (light duty)
Door stops and small hardware
Lead anchors resist loosening in:
Mechanical rooms
HVAC mounting
Garage doors
Equipment brackets
The soft metal absorbs vibration better than plastic anchors.
Lead anchors allow the screw to be removed and reinstalled without destroying the anchor—unlike plastic anchors.
Even with modern anchors available, lead anchors remain popular because they:
Work in irregular or oversized holes
Don’t crack old masonry
Provide corrosion resistance
Allow reusable threads
Are inexpensive and reliable
Your Tuff Stuff model (16‑18 × 1‑1/2") is a medium‑length lead anchor suitable for #16–#18 screws, ideal for general hardware installation in masonry.
