This is a clear, water-based gloss finish — designed for exterior wood (and some coated wood/metal/fiberglass) surfaces: railings, outdoor furniture, doors, trim. Paint Outlets+2My Old Masters+2
It includes UV absorbers to protect wood from sun damage and weathering. My Old Masters+1
It dries quickly, is easy to clean with soap & water, and is low-odor (compared with many oil-based finishes) — typical advantages of water-based clear finishes. My Old Masters+1
It’s good for outdoor wood protection: e.g. doors, window/door frames, decorative exterior wood, furniture, railings, and any wood that faces moisture, sun, or weather exposure. My Old Masters+1
So, for use cases like:
Outdoor doors / frames in your store or home
Wooden trim or panels exposed to sun/rain
Wood furniture or woodwork outside (store façade, railings, etc.)
— this finish is a solid choice.
It’s formulated for exterior use. The manufacturer explicitly notes things like: “Do not use on wooden decks, steps or fences, log homes, or surfaces below the waterline.” My Old Masters+2https://www.rockler.com/+2
Because it’s a gloss clear finish, it’s not suited for typical ceilings, drywall, or plaster surfaces. It’s meant to seal and protect wood, not to paint or cover inert surfaces like drywall/plaster or give a flat ceiling-finish.
On interior woodwork (doors, window sills, trims), while technically usable, gloss exterior varnish can look very shiny, which may or may not fit the aesthetic depending on your tastes or room design. Interior clear wood finishes meant for furniture or trim are often more suited for indoor aesthetics. This Old House+1
Gloss coatings on surfaces that expand/contract (or surfaces not meant for gloss) tend to highlight imperfections, cracks, or seams — which is why exterior gloss finishes are rarely used on ceilings, drywall, or non-wood surfaces.
Use Old Masters Ascend when you want to protect and seal real wood surfaces exposed to weather or heavy use — e.g.:
Exterior doors/window-frames of your store or home
Wooden trim, railings, or wood furniture exposed to moisture or sun
Any wood items you import or resell via Riztech (if you also want to offer finishing services or goods)
Do not use it as:
Ceiling paint or ceiling coating (drywall or plaster) — that would look odd and is not what the product is meant for.
As a substitute for interior finish on non-wood surfaces.
